I've been thinking a lot about altitude lately.
Not actual flying ...
I mean the altitude we bring to our business.
The big-picture, pattern-spotting, decision-making kind.
The part where you rise above the weeds and see what really matters.
But here’s the catch:
Most of us are still trying to fly the helicopter and crawl through the weeds at the same time.
I was chatting with a client recently about this exact thing.
She’s smart, capable, visionary.
And like so many of us, still doing far too much of what no longer needs her.
I love creating visual tools to help clients see what I can see.
So here’s something I mapped out this week.
It’s called The Altitude Matrix™, and I thought it might help you too.

What kind of altitude are you operating from right now?
There are two things that tend to shape how we work:
→ Are you thinking tactically or strategically?
→ Are you overextended or resourced?
That creates four zones:
🔹 The Overextended Operator
Tactical thinking / Low leverage
- Deep in the weeds
- Reactive, overloaded
- No space for creativity or clarity
🔸 The Efficient Doer
Tactical thinking / High leverage
- Delegating, systemising
- Driving progress with sleeves rolled up
- Leading ... just closer to the ground than they need to be
🔹 The Visionary on a Treadmill
Strategic thinking / Low leverage
- Big-picture clarity
- Support exists, but not fully activated or aligned
- Seeing the vision but can’t move toward it with ease
🔸 The Strategic Commander
Strategic thinking / High leverage
- Operating from altitude
- Calling shots, seeing patterns
- Letting support systems do their job
No quadrant is “wrong.”
We all move between them.
But here’s what I invite you to consider:
